5th Annual Yarka Vendrinska Scholarship

Mark and Tanya Bohr are pleased to announce the fifth annual scholarship for emerging photojournalists who demonstrate financial need to continue their careers. The award may be used to attend any of the photojournalism workshops at The Maine Photographic Workshops.

The $2,000 scholarship is offered in memory of Yarka, who was a passionate photojournalist. She was drawn to photograph people often ignored by society – the homeless, the aged and the ill. Finding great humanity in her subjects, she attempted to show this through her imagery.

The ideal applicant will not only be interested in photojournalism, but will have demonstrated social awareness in the spirit of Yarka’s work. While the award will be based upon need, the applicant must also provide a portfolio of recent work. Portfolios and proof of need for financial assistance should be submitted in digital format, as the awarding committee is not centrally located. For further information and application forms, see this site and this site.

Application deadline: 5:00 PM on Tuesday, April 20, 2007. The award will be announced on Yarka’s birthday, April 25, 2007.

P.S. It is unclear whether The Maine Workshops is still in operation. I was under the impression that it had shut down. I'll post an update as soon as I can confirm its status.

Is Samir Patel The Next Bee Champion?

ESPN's Darren Rovell's latest article talks about how the ABC network will now host the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest. The contest has steadily moved from the shadows to the nation's limelight, often featuring desi kids. Among Rovell's top eight picks to win it all this year are three desis.

For an interesting perspective on all of this read Amar Shah's take on the contest called Keepers Of The Hive. To access it you will need a ESPN Insider account – sorry.

Want to know more about this cultural jamboree? Watch the movies Spellbound, Bee Season or Akeelah and the Bee. Or, read American Bee: The National Spelling Bee and the Culture of Word Nerds.

Tempted to give this a shot yourself? If you are an armchair word warrior, you may want to receive Anu Garg's excellent A Word A Day to start brushing up. ESPN's SportsNation has a fun [but good God, tough] spelling test. Take it and post your score here.

Julia Dean Announces The New Documentarian Award

WHAT IS THE NEW DOCUMENTARIAN AWARD?
This award does not refer to a new photographer doing documentary projects, (though a new photographer can certainly enter this contest). But rather, the New Documentarian Award refers to a new approach to showing, sharing, and promoting documentary photography.

WHAT DESIGNATES DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY?
Documentary photography can take one of several different approaches. There are socially-concerned documentary photographers who hope to help bring about change (like Lewis Hine who photographed child laborers in America at the turn of the century) and there are photographers like Berenice Abbott, who, in the 1930’s, used an 8x10 camera to document New York City’s buildings, with the intention of preserving a place and time.

If you can answer yes to one of the questions below, then your project qualifies for the New Documentarian Award.

1. Does your project educate people about something significant?
2. Do you hope to make a difference with your documentary project?
3. Does your documentary project preserve a time and place?

WHAT DESIGNATES A LONG TERM PROJECT?
A long-term project is several things:
1. It is a project that the photographer has become deeply connected to based on the amount of time spent on the project.
2. It is a project that is stylistically and thematically unified.
3. It is a project with a message or goal.

CRITERIA
The entrant cannot have a published book or one about to be published.

WHO SHOULD ENTER?
Any professional, amateur, or student photographer who has not had a book published.

FIRST PLACE PRIZE includes:
* Publication of project images in Rangefinder Magazine
* Online Featured Gallery at The Julia Dean Photo Workshops Website
* A three-day workshop of your choice at the Julia Dean Photo Workshops, including roundtrip airfare to Los Angeles and hotel accommodations for three nights in Venice Beach, California

Guggenheim Fellowships: Four Desi Winners

Via Arun Venugopal

"You must apply to the Guggenheim Foundation to be considered in one of its annual competitions for Fellowships. The Foundation receives from 3500 to 4000 applications each year and is able to make about 220 grants. No one who applies is guaranteed success in the competition. There is no pre-screening. Applicants will be matched against others working in their own field and then against all others in the competition in a rigorous selection process. The work of artists will be reviewed by artists, scientists by scientists, historians by historians. The Foundation has a network of several hundred advisers who either meet at the Foundation offices to look at applicants' work or receive application materials to read locally. These advisers then submit reports on their ranking of the applicants in their respective fields. After this review, a final Committee of Selection weighs the applications field by field and determines how many awards to make in each area."

Four desis have won the coveted Guggenheim Fellowships this year.

Pico Iyer, Writer, Santa Barbara, California: Reflections on the fourteenth Dalai Lama.
Rohinton Mistry, Writer, Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Fiction.
Santosh Srinivas Vempala, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology: Algorithmic convex geometry.
Meenakshi Wadhwa, Curator of Meteoritics, Field Museum, Chicago: Analysis of solar wind returned by the Genesis spacecraft.

Instant Gratification

Polaroid has announced the winners of the 5th International Awards.

There are links to the first four contests as well. In this day and age of digital, all awe inspiring.

One gripe and it's a big one - why can't one enlarge these images to see what they really look like? The postage stamps are perhaps meant to deter swiping them, but gee whiz, drop a watermark or something and be done with it.

Faces Of Caring: Nurses At Work

Via Donald R. Winslow

The American Journal of Nursing (AJN), the largest and oldest continually circulated nursing journal in the world (first published in 1900; 340,000 subscribers) is calling for entries in a photojournalism contest.

Nurses provide care to people who are experiencing dimensions of life that we often don't want to think about: illness, dying, labor, bodily functions out of control, pain, suffering, immobility, and ignorance about how our bodies work and how to care for them, among others. If you are fortunate, nurses are with you when you are born, when you are sick, and when you die. Nurses serve as sentinels in hospitals, in your home, schools, industry, and other settings, as they monitor health and illness, intervening to prevent deterioration and promote recovery.

Today, there is a serious global nursing shortage. A visual portrayal of nurses at work would do much to inform and to communicate to the public the important work of nursing, contemplate that social contract, and inspire some individuals to pursue a nursing career or encourage others to do so. The American Journal of Nursing seeks compelling contemporary photographs portraying nurses at work. Selected photographs will be used on the cover of the journal, included in a public exhibit in May in New York City, and possibly published in a book or in a DVD.

Prizes
First prize : $2,500
Second prize: $1,000
Third prize: $500
Honorable Mentions: Nine additional winners, along with the top three, will appear on the covers of AJN and will be part of an exhibition in New York City in May 2005, and possibly other venues. Winners will be notified by telephone or mail by April 10, 2005. There will be additional judge's choice winners that will be part of the exhibition.

How to Submit
You may enter up to five photographs. Each entry must be accompanied by an application form. Send in an 8 x 10 print and a CD (jpeg or tiff files, 300 dpi resolution minimum). Print photographs should be labeled on the reverse side with your name. Unless the photo is taken in an open, public setting, a release form is required for all subjects in the photo who can be identified. Photos should not be posed.

Deadline
All submissions must be received by March 1, 2005. There is no fee to submit.

Terms
AJN will retain nonexclusive permission rights to use the photographs in print, online, and as part of a photography exhibit, and possibly other mediums. Materials submitted will not be returned. Photographs awarded nonfunded prizes (honorable mentions, judge's choice) will receive remuneration at a standard rate.

Send Entries to:

All Quiet

I was on a very interesting photo shoot for India Today on Friday. It is likely to be another cover image but I am not terribly sure till I actually see it. The journalism business is sure fickle and things can change at the drop of a hat. I can't say much more about who or where I was as things are still under wraps. But it was a thrill nonetheless. I'll reveal all in a few days.

On a whim to do something totally out of the ordinary, my wife and I woke up early (I woke up at 3 a.m. for some un-Godly reason) and opened the doors at our local Border's bookstore. While I am not terribly keen on corporate bookstores (prefer smelly second-hand bookstores), the coffee and the array of magazines is always a great draw.

So, thumbing through PICTURE magazine today I came to know about the Lucie Awards for new and emerging photographers. Definitely worth taking a look. If you apply and win, do let me know. I would be happy to feature your work here on this site.

Please support this site. Check out the new Tiffinbox Bazaar.

Couldn't they have made it an even $100k? That was my initial knee jerk reaction until I read the fine print and found out that this contest was based out of England where the currency is pounding (pun intended) the crap out of the US dollar. Regardless, it's a photography contest that I think might be worth looking into.

Clips, Got Clips?

Ok, so, it's NOT a clip-contest. But all you folks with digital cameras - this is your chance to show your stuff. The 2004 Philadelphia Conference Monthly Digital Competition is underway. I am assuming it's meant for working photojournalists but check the rules and submission guidelines before sending in pictures of Fluffy the dog.

Enter photos taken in January 2004. The Photo of the Month winner will be awarded a $100 gift certificate from Allen's Camera Shop of Levittown, PA. 215.547.2841.

Participation is quick and easy. Click for instructions:
http://www.philadelphiaconference.org/competitions/monthly/

Shared username (pconf) and password (pixels) will get you access to the competition and submission pages.

Matt Stanley is our monthly competition chair and can be contacted for more information. DEADLINE 01.07.04, 11 p.m.

(Membership dues may be required later in 2004, but free members may participate until then.)

I am not entirely sure of the deadline. 01.07? That's almost a month ago now is it. Time does fly when you are having fun.

"HAPPY WRINKLES" Digital Photography Competition

Much in the spirit of the M.I.L.K. contest (see the book series in The Book Nook, in the left column), here is something for Singaporeans and presumably other South Asians to consider entering.

The HAPPY WRINKLES Digital Photography Competition runs from September 1 to October 22. You don't have much time, so get out there and get your grandma to say "cheese." Or, better yet, how about a documentary on the elderly in your neck of the woods. If you are working on a project along those lines, drop me a note and I'll be happy to feature it here on TiffinBox!

Photo Contest for Amateurs

I got this from the Google News service. Didn't cut and paste the original URL, but the information reads more like a press release and I am skipping attributing the source this one time.

The International Library of Photography is pleased to announce that over $60,000 in prizes will be awarded this year in the International Open Amateur Photography Contest. Photographers from the Durham and Middlefield area, particularly beginners, are welcome to try to win their share of over 1,300 prizes. The deadline for the contest is October 31, 2003. The contest is open to everyone and entry is free.

"Everyone has at least one memorable photo that captures a special moment in time," stated Christina Baylon, contest director. "When people learn about our free photography contest, they suddenly realize that their own favorite photos can win cash prizes, as well as gain national exposure," continued Baylon.

To enter, send ONE photograph in only one of the following categories: people, travel, pets, children, sports, nature, action, humor, portraiture, or other. The photo must be a color or black-and-white print (unmounted) and 8" by 10" or smaller. All entries must include the photographer's name and address on the back, as well as the category and the title of the photo. Photographs should be sent to: The International Library of Photography, Suite 101-2617, 3600 Crondall Lane, Owings Mills, MD 21117. Entries must be postmarked by October 31, 2003. You may also submit your photo directly online at www.picture.com.

The International Library of Photography is an organization dedicated to bringing the work of amateur photographers to the public's attention. You can view the work of over 1.1 million amateur photographers at their website, www.picture.com.
